Students should learn sight words in grade 2 because they are high-frequency words that build reading fluency, comprehension, and confidence. Instantly recognizing these words frees up mental energy for understanding sentence meaning and helps with decoding more complex words. Many sight words are not phonetic, so they must be learned "at a glance" to prevent them from slowing down the reading process.
