Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How long does it take on average for a class to complete one of the assessment statements?
A: That is dependent on what pages in the student materials you use. Only some of the pages or all (i.e. the emoji face sheet, the drawing sheet and for older students the writing sheet). It also depends on whether you discuss each colour image and if you play a picture storybook video how long that video is. I have placed a time indicator under each storybook video and they vary from 3 minutes to 10 minutes on average. Plan for the first, second and even the third time your class completes an assessment statement to take a little longer but because the program is so structured they will get faster with experience. For example, I show my Grade One class one storybook video, briefly discuss each colour image, show the three quick review short videos and have my class fill in the emoji face graph and draw a picture. Depending on the length of the picture storybook video it takes my class an average of between 15 and 25 minutes to complete an assessment statement.

Q: Am I required to complete all 20 Core Competency statements and do I have to use all parts of the Core Competency Visual Guide?
A: That decision is mainly up to you or it could be up to the direction from your specific school district, or administrator. Please confer with your administrator at your school.

Q:How many times per school year must I complete the Ministry of Education requirement of having my students complete a student self-reflection/evaluation of their Core Competencies?
A: That decision is mainly up to you or it could be up to the direction from your specific school district, or administrator. Please confer with your administrator at your school.

Q: Is there a guide or source of information that can help me learn how to deliver this program?
A: Yes. You can use the Teacher Guide "Getting Started" found at the top of the page under the Visual Guides tab here on the website. there are also videos that will guide you through how to use the resource under the tab videos. Those same videos are also located on YouTube just click the YouTube link here on the website.

Q: Can I send in a testimonial of my using the program and how I found certain ways to teach it that worked in my class?
A: Yes, I would welcome testimonials from users and would possibly to place your testimonial on the website for others to read. Please include your first name, last initial, grade you teach, school you teach at and school district that you are employed with. Email your testimonial to corecompetencyvisualguide@gmail.com

Q: Is there any opportunity to offer some collaborative constructive criticism, suggestions for different wording or new book, or to mention a typo or other error spotted?
A: Yes, I welcome all suggestions, opinions, ideas for additions, changes, and notification of errors. Please send your comments, etc. to the website email at corecompetencyvisualguide@gmail.com.

Q: Do you offer any in-person or on-line Zoom workshops for professional development?
A: Yes, I am available for in-person workshops for groups of 20 or more and I can host an on-line workshop on Zoom if requested again for groups of 20 or more. Workshops are about 2 1/2 hours in length. All materials can be printed off from the PDF Student Materials tab. Using the Teacher Guide and the provided videos this resource can also easily be done as a self-directed Pro-D as well.
Q: Is the program offered in French?
A: At the point in time, no. There has not been enough of a call to offer it in French. All of the statements and text could be translated using Google Translate but the accuracy may not be perfect. All of the storybooks and there are 85 would need to be recorded in French, something I am not capable of doing myself. So at this point in time, unless the province of Quebec wants to use the program or there is a big call for a French version, it is not in the plans to do.

Q: Does the Core Competency Visual Guide program have the permission from publishers to use the picture storybooks?
A: Yes. There are 46 publishers linked to the 85 storybooks. # of the books are out of print and the publishing companies no longer exist. The remaining publishers were contacted by email. In some cases on-line forms were completed. Given the use of the storybooks does not result in any monetary fees being collected permission was granted in some cases with a limit of 10 years of use.

Q: If I wanted to obtain actual copies of the books used where can I find the information about each book?
A: If you want to use an actual hard copy of the books in your lessons instead of the video edition of each story then you will find that in each of the twenty online books on the Core Competency Visual Guide website, directly under each video of the storybook, there will be information consisting of the book title, author, publisher, year of publication and the ISBN. There is also a comprehensive list of all of the books used in the Teacher Guide "Getting Started" where a full biography lists all the information again. All of the books should be easy enough to obtain from your school library, public library, local bookshop or online from a site like Amazon.
Q: The students who appear in the video shorts - Do they have media consent?
A: Yes. All of the students used in the video shorts have a signed media consent forms from the school and permission was obtained from their parents, with an explanation of the roles and that the product would be shared province wide.

Q: The images of students used - was permission obtained for their use.
