Career & Health Education
Students are introduced to classroom routines, learn basic social skills, and begin to build foundational academic skills. This includes learning classroom rules, procedures like bathroom and handwashing routines. Students are shown the location of supplies, learning areas, and important locations like the office and library. ​And they are introduced to the daily schedule, helping them adjust to the routines, even if activities are simple at first. Storybooks, videos, songs, PDF's of worksheets, and instructional videos are included.
Key areas include respectful behaviour towards others, following instructions, and being prepared for class. Other key areas include respect, responsibility, and safety. For example, rules cover listening to the teacher, being kind to classmates, keeping hands and feet to themselves, and respecting school property. Expectations focus on establishing a positive and productive learning environment through these clear rules and routines. This includes teaching them to be respectful, responsible, and ready to learn, as well as how to follow directions, participate in group activities, and communicate effectively. They should also learn to manage their belongings, follow a daily routine, and begin to develop organizational skills. Basic manners like saying "please," "thank you," and "excuse me," as well as how to ask for permission and wait their turn. Additionally, teaching them to apologize when necessary and to use the problem solving board and to offer help when appropriate are important social skills. In the "All About You" unit, students learn about their individual characteristics, including physical traits, feelings, and preferences. Students can learn to identify their unique physical characteristics, like hair and eye colour, and explore their feelings and emotions. They can discover their talents and hobbies, and what they enjoy doing. ​Students can discuss their family members, their roles, and traditions. Students learn about the importance of healthy eating, identifying different food groups, and understanding how food helps them grow and stay healthy. They also learn about hygiene practices like brushing their teeth and washing their hands.​ Students will understand that food provides energy for activities, helps them grow, and keeps them healthy according to some health and wellness websites. Learning that eating a variety of foods from different food groups is important for getting all the necessary nutrients. Students learn to sort food into the basic food groups. Hygiene topics focus on practices like brushing teeth, washing hands. As well, students learn about the benefits of physical activity for overall health and well-being, while also nderstanding that adequate sleep is important for growth and energy levels. Students learn some basic safety rules for various situations, including walking near traffic, interacting with strangers, and in the event of an emergency. They learn about fire safety, including the importance of smoke alarms and what to do when they sound. Additionally, rules such as safety around water, during lightning storms and stranger danger are also discussed. Students learn the importance of being able to recite their full name, address, and phone number in case of an emergency and know how to dial 911 in case of an emergency and what information to provide. ​Lastly, both school and classroom safety rules and ​basic home safety rules, such as not playing with fire, keeping away from electrical outlets, and not touching cleaning supplies are emphasized. Students are taught the basics of germs and how they relate to health. This includes understanding that germs are tiny and can cause illness, how germs spread, and how to prevent their spread through good hygiene practices like handwashing. They also learn about the importance of covering coughs and sneezes, and some basic concepts about healthy eating and rest. Health education focuses on building a foundation of good habits. This includes healthy eating (fruits, vegetables, balanced meals), drinking water, the importance of physical activity, and personal hygiene (brushing teeth, washing hands), dealing with stress and getting plenty of sleep. Students learn about the basic needs of pets and how to care for them responsibly. This includes understanding that pets need food, water, shelter, and love, and that they rely on humans for these things. They also learn about different types of pets and their unique needs, as well as the importance of being kind and respectful to all animals. Basic dog safety, includes how to approach a dog respectfully, how to avoid triggering a dog, and what to do if a dog approaches them unexpectedly. They should learn to ask for permission before petting a dog, to let the dog sniff their hand first, and to avoid touching a dog's head, face, or tail. Children should also be taught to leave a dog alone when it's eating, sleeping, or caring for puppies. If a loose dog approaches, they should stand still and avoid eye contact.
